This is what I live for.

Footprints in Wood Tell Story of Buddhist Monk’s Prayers.

Rainbow Flag

I’ve been blessed my entire life. You can’t put words to my family’s kindness, generosity, and just damn amazing love.

I recently married the woman of my dreams (now, Stephanie Jackson – she took my last name, even though it’s totally not hip these days ;) ). I never imagined I’d get married… but this woman is out of sight.

After being married 10 months and being with her for 9 years now, I can say without a doubt that marriage was a *big* deal. It wasn’t just rings, or cake, or vows, it was a magically transformative part of my life. It’s been hard as hell. But wonderful as anything imaginable. It let me personally and publicly express my love for Steph.

So what the fuck California? Pardon my french (especially Mom, if you’re reading this.) But, holy jesus what were you thinking California (and all the other states that are stuck in the 50’s)?

My sister is gay, my brother is gay, people I work with are gay. And you know what, they aren’t any different. They aren’t some cyborg waiting to take over the world. They aren’t going to try and make all the heterosexuals in the world “switch.” They just want the same rights as every other heterosexual person.

I’m frustrated. Fucking hell I’m frustrated beyond belief. I sit and watch as people I love are oppressed because of who they love. Is that not the most inane thing? Is not all love allowed to be equal?

In 2009 I can buy a 1TB hard drive for $80, but my sister can’t legally marry her partner and get equal benefits. Um, wow.

So California, if you’re reading this. Please check yourself. You gave this world a chance for a breathe of reality, of sanity, or normalcy – at a time when we really really need it. As the Beatles said, “All you need is love.” So let us love. Let everyone love!

People are people. We should not determine their rights based upon what’s between their legs.

Heterosexual women, Dr. [Meredith] Chivers and her colleagues found, were no more excited by athletic naked men doing yoga or tossing stones into the ocean than they were by the control footage: long pans of the snowcapped Himalayas. When straight women viewed a video of a naked woman doing calisthenics, on the other hand, their blood flow increased significantly.

25 And Over

May 27th, 2009

Amen. Note to self: print and hand out. (thanks to frangry.)

If you have reached the age of 25, I have a bit of bad news for you, to wit: it is time, if you have not already done so, for you to emerge from your cocoon of post-adolescent dithering and self-absorption and join the rest of us in the world. Past the quarter-century mark, you see, certain actions, attitudes, and behaviors will simply no longer do, and while it might seem unpleasant to feign a maturity and solicitousness towards others that you may not genuinely feel, it is not only appreciated by others but necessary for your continued survival. Continuing to insist past that point that good manners, thoughtfulness, and grooming oppress you in some way is inappropriate and irritating.

Grow up.

And when I instruct you to grow up, I do not mean that you must read up on mortgage rates, put aside candy necklaces, or desist from substituting the word “poo” for crucial syllables of movie titles. Silliness is not only still permitted but actively encouraged. You must, however, stop viewing carelessness, tardiness, helplessness, or any other quality better suited to a child as either charming or somehow beyond your control. A certain grace period for the development of basic consideration and self-sufficiency is assumed, but once you have turned 25, the grace period is over, and starring in a film in your head in which you walk the earth alone is no longer considered a valid lifestyle choice, but rather grounds for exclusion from social occasions.

And now, for those of you who might have misplaced them, marching orders for everyone born before 1980.

I love Pema. Glad Andy got something out of her book.

I never took a serious interest in Buddhism. Maybe because it never did anything for me, I never did anything for it. Yesterday that changed.

Zoe and I were on a flight when I got furious at a flight attendant. Mean thoughts dominated my mind and shaped my attitude. I pulled out my iPod hoping to find something with the power to calm me. I found Pema Chödrön’s lecture, Getting Unstuck, and started at around the 35 minute mark.

Within five minutes my emotional situation was explained and my rage subsided. She had begun to explain shenpa and I saw how I had become attached to my angry feelings for the flight attendant. At that moment it was easy to let go of the anger.

Today the lesson resonates like a gong. A few minutes ago I unsubscribed myself from a blog that stokes my rage and fails to provide great enough value to offset the time spent reading. I get attached to things for the nuttiest reasons.

this movie is to boners what pot was the The Beatles. and James fucking Spader is in it. dude wins. dude wins.

have you ever watched this with a girl? its like the new Clockwork Orange “if she doesnt think im a weirdo for really liking this we will be dating longer than three months” kind of movie. you gotta throw that in there once in a while. like, after you’ve been dating for a year suddenly pretend that you got really into John Mayer or modern country or something. if she swings with it, you’re in the clear, and you can be all “do you really think i cry when i hear Bubbly Toes?”. true story: i joked that i could only have sex to the Chicago Bulls Warm Up Song and she believed me and then that was the end of our first date, as far as i was concerned. that is a true story.

Over at Automattic, we’ve been hard at work on P2, a, dare I say, revolutionary “theme” for WordPress. I’m very proud to have been involved with the development and design of it – I work with some amazing people and this has been an especially fascinating project.

I put “theme” in quotes, because P2 is not just a “theme.” It is a way of thinking. Specifically about “themes,” but also about what WordPress is – it’s obviously much more than a CMS or a blogging system. Calling P2 a “theme” just doesn’t do it justice.

As trial will show, it’s done a lot for Automattic alone. In just the past few months our modes of communication have drastically changed – more so than I would have expected – all because of P2. Also, our productivity and transparency (both internally and externally) have grown fantastically.

WordPress “themes” are finally moving away from set formulas to attacking problems and adpating to workflows… they are doing what design is supposed to do: solve problems. Themes are becoming applications. And, something tells me, we’re going to see some amazing things from the WordPress community in the near future. I’m excited.

Get P2 at WordPress.com or for your self-hosted blog.
